Have you ever found yourself in that "weird in-between" phase? You’ve made the brave decision to leave a role or field that no longer fits, but the full picture of your next chapter hasn’t quite come into focus yet. It is called the Liminality Phase. It’s the space between your old life and your new one. While it can feel like confusion, a lack of confidence, or even a sense of failure, it is actually a vital part of your journey. If you are a person with multiple interests and an unconventional career story, here are four strategies to help you navigate this transition without feeling like you’re starting from zero. 1. Honor Your Old SelfIt is tempting to want to slam the door on your previous career and never look back. However, every twist, turn, and "failed" venture has contributed to the person you are today. Honoring your old self means sitting with your emotions and processing the loss of that chapter. Whether it was a layoff that pushed you to learn a new skill or an unsettling voice that told you it was time to pause, these experiences are the foundation for your next move. There are always lessons to be learned from your previous career periods. These lessons will carry into your next role. 2. Document Your Small WinsWhen you’re in the thick of a career pivot, it’s easy to forget how much you’ve accomplished. To combat this, start a practice of documenting small wins. This could be as simple as:
By writing down the good things that happen to you, you train your brain to see that while things might not look exactly how you envisioned right now, progress is still being made. Gratitude in the in-between phase is a powerful tool for maintaining your momentum. 3. Prioritize Clarity Over SpeedIn the liminality phase, you might feel a rush to "just do something" to escape the uncertainty. But there is no use in running if you aren't sure where you're going. Take this time to build a small, supportive community and, more importantly, spend time with yourself. Analyze your past career decisions:
Having a mind of your own about your next path is essential. Clarity is the most important asset you can develop during this phase. 4. Trust the Process and the PurposeFor many, including myself, faith plays a huge role in navigating the unknown. Trusting that everything works together for your good. Even in the quiet, "unproductive" phases, there is a purpose. Every version of your career is a stepping stone. Once you move out of this liminality phase, you will face new wins and new challenges, so learn to appreciate exactly where you are today.
